Yay! Goplan 2 Roadmap

I know a lot of you have been waiting for news about the next iteration of Goplan for quite a long time - we’ve done a poor job of telling you what we’re working on as of late. So to hopefully make all of that better, we’ve just launched our Goplan 2 roadmap. The roadmap has details on everything you can expect from the upcoming version of Goplan.

We’re going to keep the roadmap updated with both our progress as well as sneak peaks at what is coming soon. Naturally we’ll still make blog posts about these changes, but the roadmap should give you a really good idea of what’s going on at any point in time. We’re even considering adding real-time commit information to it, that would give you real-time info about who’s working on what, and what changes are being pushed to the live servers, as well as the new Goplan 2 code-base.

More changes

We’re also changing a few things here and there around the site and blog. We’re discontinuing the forum and moving some of the feedback discussions over to Get Satisfaction, because they provide a really great platform for you guys to suggest features and start discussions about the product. You may also note that we’re solving the domain name mess. We’re going to move everything into the new goplanapp.com domain (you should be seeing this blog on the new domain as well). Pretty soon we’ll move the application from goplan.org into goplanapp.com as well, something we’ve been wanting to do for a while.

a few question upfront:
-will the current plans be upgraded to goplan2 when it is ready?
-will the api change?
-will you implement a time tracking feature?

Thanks for the early support guys, I know how painful it was in the past to wait for updates and hear silence in return. That won’t happen again.

- Yes, plans and accounts will transition to the new version. We’ll do the migration ourselves for everyone. We want it to be a smooth transition.
- We’re hoping to release a REST API a little after we launch GP2. It is likely that the API does change, because there’s quite a few updates at the data model level, but we’re trying to make it easy to migrate apps from the current API to the new one.
- That’s the tricky one. We’re thinking about it, and we even have some code in place already, but we’re still wondering whether we’re better off building something ourselves or integrating with an application that already exists (like Harvest, or something similar). We’ll definitely have updates on this soon - I know a lot of people have the same question.

integration with harvest & tickspot would be a solution; though we would prefer to have an all in one product ;)
it all depends on how well the time tracking fits in with goplan…

Yeah, I know we were bound to make some people unhappy by removing chat from the main product. But it’s still our plan (we even have part of it built) to build an external solution that can be integrated. It’ll be gone by default at least when Goplan 2 launches, but our plan is to launch a better chat solution next. But we’ll definitely consider all our options. Sorry this change affects you - I hope our solution works for you, though. I’ll keep you posted on the news.

Hey CB, we’re working hard on a timeline and we’ll post it as soon as we know for sure. We’ll probably post a rough timeline in a couple of days, and we’ll also update the roadmap accordingly :-) Keep an eye out for a blog post on it!

Fantastic update guys! More than what I’m sure most people were looking forward to. The new features look great! I’m really excited to see them roll out. :)

@Vivara - They did say they’d be relaunching the chat as a separate product, so that’s always available. In the meantime I’d suggest using Meebo. It logs your chats, which you can then export and upload to GoPlan’s file system, or post it as a note.

@Lorren - Unfortunately, it looks like Basecamp is what I need. I really need the chat now, and Meebo just does not work for me.

I know Campfire is separate, but they offer a free account with four users, which is all I need - for the client, my partner and me.

If this product from Webreakstuff is offered free (with more than 10 users) for anyone with GoPlan, I’d seriously consider switching.

Also, what happened to custom colours and branding? I thought that was coming Fred. What’s the point in not announcing it.

Ed, I was under the impression we mentioned it on the roadmap, but I’ll have a second look and update it, because it is *definitely* coming. And yes, our chat functionality that we’ll abstract out of Goplan will likely be free for Goplan users.
